Recruit a hero (gold/resource producing speciality is best for scout heroes to make them even more useful to your kingdom), take all troops off him and give him 3 of your fastest units (speed 11 or higher is the best). Put each unit in a different slot: ex. Slot1 - Dragonfly, Slot2 - Dragonfly, Slot3 - Dragonfly.
As with my level 1 rankings I often include the unupgraded unit in the list because often by the time you'd think about upgrading the level 2 dwelling the level 2 creature is useless. Anyway, for the rest: 1. Marksman. Castle's map-clearing unit, and for good reason.

The different style used for the units in HoMM1 isn't to everyone's liking either. The units are larger and have a more caricatured look to them, almost like out of a book for children. They are very similar to the style used in Might & Magic 3 and 4 (the RPG games). I like this style a lot, though my favorite is the one used in HoMM2.
